Ninjam!



For years we have been talking about jamming together, now its possible, I have tested this and it works brilliantly.

Go to http://www.ninjam.com and get the client for your operating system.

Then connect to our very own ninjam server, just for efnet midiwarez, by going to the file menu and choosing connect in the ninjam client.
Connect to Host: r4d.org:2049
Username: whatever you want
And tick the connect anonymously box.

You might need to change your audio preferences by going to options, audio configuration, most people have most luck with Asio.

You can also choose your saving preferences in options, preferences, most people prefer just to tick the middle of the three boxes.

How it works
Each person connects to the server, you will need about 90kbps upstream to connect perfectly, thats bits not bytes.
What each person hears is everyone else delayed by one bar, but you hear yourself realtime, this compensates for internet lag in a musically preferable way, you dont even realise that there is any lag.
The server sends you the stream of everyone at about 90kbps also, so most people should have no issues.
You can adjust your own mix of everyone inside the client, so if you want the drums louder or whatever, go ahead.

The client also has some effects and plugins, including a drummer plugin, this is confusing at first, but its important to set the drum plugin to the same bpm as the client, you can edit the drum patterns, they are stored as text files in your install dir (or create a new one), the examples should get you started.

RCC Second Anniversary Special

It has now been 2 years since the formation of the Rapid Composers Consortium.

To celebrate the 2nd anniversary, which will also be the 25th event, we have planned something very different!

Below is a list of challenges, you can pick and choose which you wish to do, bonus points will be issued if you complete them all!
Due to the number of challenges, RCC is open now, and will remain open until midnight on the 24th of June! Yes thats right, you have over 3 weeks to participate!

The rules are hopefully simple, below is a list of challenges, each challenge specifies its own unique requirements. Some are more difficult than others, please read through the requirements of each challenge carefully before participating.

You MUST upload your tracks into the correct challenge folders labelled as follows,

For example if user dork completed challenge number 3, he would upload 3-dork.mp3 into the challenge3 folder or if user lamer completed challenge number 9 he would upload 9-lamer.mp3 into the challenge9 folder


Challenge 1
We have created a zip file containing a number of samples, drums, leads, bass, guitars, pianos, noise etc.
Download the zip from here. Make a track of any style using ONLY the samples included in the zip file.
You are free to cut up and mangle the samples as much as you like, be creative, pitch shift, delays, reverse them, bit crush, ring mod, anything you like! Cheesiness is expected here.


Challenge 2
Choose an instrument you can play, could be guitars, keys, bass, drums, anything you like!
Play anything you like, in 1 take, NO EDITING ALLOWED
It might be desirable to keep this short, say under 1 minute.
For bonus points, video yourself doing it, and upload your video as 2-nick.avi or 2-nick.mpg or 2-nick.mov where nick is your irc name!
The video is not compulsory, so dont worry if you cant do that, the honor system is in place for this challenge.


Challenge 3
Create a piece of music using only these 4 notes - C, C sharp, F sharp, G.
You can use any percussion you like but the melody must only be these 4 notes.
You can slide between notes or use portamento if you want, but the goal here is to be creative with a limited set of notes to work with.
Use big octave jumps, trills, bends etc to keep it interesting.


Challenge 4
Make a track that is ALL YOUR OWN HUMAN VOICE.
Use your own voice to create sounds, beats, rhythms, noises, cut them up and make something interesting.
This is your chance to be really creative, it could also be your chance to make something amusing. This is perhaps the hardest of all challenges!


Challenge 5
Make a track using the following chart -

Tempo 90, 4/4
1. E minor - 2 bars
2. C major - 2 bars
3. G major - 2 bars
4. D Major - 2 bars
5. A Minor - 2 bars
6. F Major - 2 bars
7. C Major - 2 bars
8. G Major - 1 bar
9. B Major - 1 bar
Repeat from 1.
10. E Minor - 1 bar finish

Chord substitutions within the same tonality are permitted, i.e. you can play a seventh instead of a major if you desire.
This piece should be 32 bars long plus the last e minor chord to finish - good luck!


Challenge 6 Create a track using ONLY FREE SOFTWARE.
You should ideally include an image file or text file detailing the software you used.
Free means really free, not free as in warez! and extends to plugins, instruments, sequencers etc.


OK, thats it, 6 challenges, 3 weeks to do what you can, good luck everyone! Remember RCC 25 ends at midnight on the 24th of June.

Since the last update, it has been decided to change the bpm to 110, everything else remains the same.

bongmeup and Ekchuan have agreed to provide the backing track, my sincere appreciation to them.

They have also suggested that 120bpm is too generic and therefore prefer 130bpm
This change means that the backing track will be 32 bars of 4/4 at 130bpm in F Minor(so set your sequencer to 130bpm and paste the loop at 0:0:0 and you should be rocking)
The last 2 bars will be the transition between submissions, so you should leave this relatively if not completely blank.
The loop should be available soon, so check back often for more details!

After some discussions in the channel, it has been decided to come up with a new format for RCC in April.
These details are still preliminary and are subject to change but...heres what we have come up with.

→ Instead of each participant making there own track a backing track will be provided.
→ The backing track will consist of sparse drums and a bass line (to set the key and progression) - this will allow you to add additional drums, melody and rhythm.
→ The backing track will be exactly 32 bars, 130bpm and the instrumentation tuned to a440, in F Minor
→ Participants should submit an mp3 that is also 32 bars of 130bpm 4/4 long, containing a mix down of all of their components, but NOT the backing track - the last 2 bars of the user submission should be silent to allow a transition between participants.
→ All of the submissions will be mixed into 1 long track, with only level matching provided by the master mix person (mixmaster).
→ It is expected that the submissions will vary greatly in style and quality - thats part of the fun.
→ RCC will still end at midnight saturday eastern USA time, but may start a couple of days earlier to give people more time to participate.
